Activist Post: World Leaders Play ‘Nuclear War Game’ During Netherlands Summit to Test Nuclear Attack Responses.

Activist PostDuring the G7 nuclear summit in the Netherlands this week, heads of government played a interactive nuclear war game that was designed to test their response to a terrorist plan to set off a “dirty bomb” in a Western metropolis.

President Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese premier Xi Jinping were all a part of the games which showed a series of short films where terrorists planed to use stolen nuclear material to set off a “dirty bomb” in a unnamed Western metropolis, reports The Telegraph.

A diplomatic source told The Telegraph that the heads of state had to react to the films in real time as they were equipped with a computer tablet with a touch screen displaying responses.

“It could be the city of London or Wall Street, Milan or anywhere,” summit goers were told, according to The Telegraph’s report.

“US officials” said the games where meant to give the state leaders at the summit a “scare you to death” feeling that would make then think deeply into their reaction during a nuclear attack.

In the end, as it is being reported, the leaders were able to thwart the attack due to their decision making.

Another interesting note:

During a press conference in the Netherlands on Tuesday, President Barrack Obama said he is more concerned about a nuke going off in Manhattan then he is of any threat coming from Russia.

“Russia’s actions are a problem. They don’t pose the No. 1 national security threat to the United States. I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan,” Obama said in response to a reports question on whether or not Russia is the biggest political foe of the US.

The G7 group has said a Moscow-backed referendum in Crimea on switching from Ukraine to Russia would have “no legal effect” and called on Moscow to back down.On Wednesday, the G7 – the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US – along with EU leaders called on Russia “to cease all efforts to change the status of Crimea contrary to Ukrainian law and in violation of international law”, according to a statement released by the White House.

“Any such referendum would have no legal effect,” they said.

“Given the lack of adequate preparation and the intimidating presence of Russian troops, it would also be a deeply flawed process which would have no moral force. For all these reasons, we would not recognise the outcome.”

The statement comes before Sunday’s referendum in the Black Sea peninsula and as the US president, Barack Obama, prepared to meet the Ukrainian prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, to the White House on Wednesday.

Russian troops moved into Crimea, a predominantly ethnic Russian region, after the February 22 removal in Kiev of Ukraine’s pro-Kremlin leader Viktor Yanukovich.

The move by Moscow has sparked the biggest breakdown in relations with the West since the Cold War.

The G7 and the EU said annexation of Crimea would be a “clear violation” of the UN Charter, and would violate Russia’s commitments under several other treaties.

“Should the Russian Federation take such a step, we will take further action, individually and collectively,” the group said.

They called on Russia to de-escalate the crisis by moving forces back to bases in Ukraine and reducing numbers to pre-crisis levels, opening talks with Kiev and using international mediators to address concerns.

“We also remind the Russian Federation of our decision to suspend participation in any activities related to preparation of a G8 Sochi meeting until it changes course and the environment comes back to where the G8 is able to have a meaningful discussion,” they said.

G-7 Warns Russia Of "Grave Consequences" If Crimea Annexed | Zero Hedge

G-7 Warns Russia Of “Grave Consequences” If Crimea Annexed | Zero Hedge.

The G-8(-1) is clearly concerned about the fall-out from this weekend’s referendum in Crimea and in its strngest language yet is condemning (and threatening) Russia:

  • *G-7 CALLS ON RUSSIA TO ‘DE-ESCALATE THE CONFLICT IN CRIMEA’
  • *RUSSIA ANNEXATION OF CRIMEA WOULD VIOLATE UN CHARTER: G-7
  • *G-7 CALLS ON RUSSIA TO HALT SUPPORT FOR CRIMEA REFERENDUM
  • *G-7 SAYS WILL NOT RECOGNIZE RESULT OF CRIMEA REFERENDUM
  • *’CEASE EFFORTS TO CHANGE’ STATUS OF CRIMEA, G-7 TELLS RUSSIA
  • *G-7 SAYS ANNEXATION OF CRIMEA WOULD HAVE ‘GRAVE CONSEQUENCES’

Then, after the threats, calls on Russia to let observers into the country and enter into talks with the Ukrainian government (which has already appeared to give up on Crimea). This comes as Ukraine’s PM visits Obama in D.C.

The Group of Seven most developed economies is calling on Russia to stop all efforts to “annex” Ukraine’s Crimea region, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said today.

G7 leaders, European Council head Hermann Van Rompuy “and I will in a new declaration call on Russia to cease all efforts to annex Ukraine’s autonomous republic of Crimea,” Barroso said in a tweeted message.

“Together with other G7 leaders, Van Rompuy and myself have strongly and unequivocally condemned this action on behalf of the EU,” Barroso said.

Pro-Russian leaders there have organised a referendum for Sunday on whether Crimea should join with Russia, with most expecting the vote, if it goes ahead, to produce a large majority in favour.

Barroso said the referendum was illegal and called for immediate steps to de-escalate the situation.

“Any attempt to legitimise a referendum in Crimea is contrary to the Ukrainian constitution and international law and quite clearly illegal,” he said

“If meaningful negotiations do not begin within the next few days and produce results within a limited timeframe, this will trigger additional measures,” he added.

The G7 announcement will be made as Ukraine interim prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk heads for talks with US President Barack Obama, with the pressure for more sanctions against  Moscow mounting.
